Writing the Future, 2021
Gerald Curtis, William Kherbek and Claire Zakiewicz
Comissioned by Arts Council, England and Hounslow Council
For Future Visions, an exhibition of new works commissioned for Hounslow High St, Gerald Curtis, William Kherbek and Claire Zakiewicz collaborated to create a performance painting: Writing the Future. Taking the exhibition brief as a starting point to reimagine the purpose of the high street after the impact of Covid-19, Writing the Future is a 45 minute performance which incorporates themes of creative participation and attunement.
William Kherbeck of the band Dirtagnan has created a soundtrack specifically for the performance. To this music, Claire and Gerald move through a series of phases and actions with paint. Layering marks made in response to each other, or temporarily without sight, they use the music as a device for creating tension and momentum within the traces of movement on the surface of the canvas. Although the title of the work seems to attempt to divine what is to come or to influence, the aim of the performance is to generate a piece that oscillates between possibilities of interpretation, cooperation and collaborative practice. The outcome is a unique piece, a moment that the artists have created together and something that none of them would be able to generate as individuals.
This piece will be exhibited as photographic and video documentation (by artist and videographer Cristina Schek) with the possible opportunity to view the performance live in Hounslow later in the year.
